Introduction
George Granville Francis Egerton, 2nd Earl of Ellesmere, was born on 15 June 1823 and died on 19 September 1862. He was a member of the British peerage and affiliated with the Conservative Party. His family was the Egerton family.
Egerton was the eldest son of Francis Egerton, 1st Earl of Ellesmere. He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford, and Trinity College, Cambridge. On 29 April 1846, he married Lady Mary Campbell, who was the daughter of the 1st Earl Cawdor. The marriage produced two sons: Hon. Francis Charles Granville (1847β1914) and Hon. Alfred John Francis (1854β1890). Alfred John Francis served as a Member of Parliament for Eccles.
In 1847, Egerton was elected as the Member of Parliament for North Staffordshire. He held this parliamentary seat until 1851, when he resigned due to health issues.
He inherited the titles of Earl of Ellesmere and related peerages in 1857 upon the death of his father. As the 2nd Earl of Ellesmere, he held these titles until his death in 1862. Following his death, he was succeeded by his eldest son, Francis.
