Introduction

Edward Grey was born on 25 March 1782. He was the son of Charles Grey, 1st Earl Grey, and the younger brother of Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Following his father's elevation to the peerage in 1801, Grey was entitled to the style "The Honourable."

Grey received his education at Eton College before matriculating at Christ Church, Oxford, in 1799. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1803, obtained a Master of Arts in 1806, and later earned both Bachelor of Divinity and Doctor of Divinity degrees in 1831.

His ecclesiastical career included holding the livings of St Mary, Whickham in County Durham from 1816 to 1828, and St Botolph-without-Bishopsgate in London from 1828 to 1832. He served as Dean of Hereford from 1830 until 1832.

Grey was nominated to the bishopric of Hereford by King William IV on 4 May 1832. He was consecrated as a bishop on 20 May 1832 and served in this position until his death. Additionally, he was appointed a canon of Westminster Abbey in 1833.
