Introduction

James Stuart, 2nd Earl of Bute (circa 1696 – 28 January 1723), was a Scottish nobleman. He was the son of James Stuart, 1st Earl of Bute, and Agnes Mackenzie.

In February 1711, he married Lady Anne Campbell, daughter of Archibald Campbell, 1st Duke of Argyll, and Elizabeth Tollemache. Together, they had eight children:

- John Stuart, who became the 3rd Earl of Bute (born 25 May 1713, died 10 March 1792)

- James Stuart-Mackenzie (born before 1723, died around April 1800)

- Hon. Archibald Stuart

- Lady Mary Stuart (born circa 1713, died 30 December 1773), who married Sir Robert Menzies of Weem on 31 October 1729 (born circa 1706, died 1786)

- Lady Elizabeth Stuart

- Lady Anne Stuart (born before 1723, died 28 November 1786), who married James Johnstone in July 1736; he later became the 5th Lord Ruthven of Freeland and was known as Ruthven.

- Lady Jean Stuart

- Lady Grace Stuart

Upon his death in 1723, his widow, Lady Anne Campbell, remarried to Alexander Fraser, known as Lord Strichen.
