Introduction
Charles Boyle, 2nd Earl of Burlington, PC (died 9 February 1704), was an Anglo-Irish peer, courtier, and politician.
**Early Life**
Charles Boyle was the eldest son of Charles Boyle, 3rd Viscount Dungarvan, and Lady Jane Seymour. His birth date is not specified.
**Career**
In 1690, Boyle was elected as a Member of Parliament for Appleby. The following year, in 1691, he was appointed Governor of County Cork. In 1694, upon inheriting his father's titles, he resigned his parliamentary seat. His inherited titles included Viscount Dungarvan, Baron Clifford, and Baron Clifford of Lanesborough.
In 1695, Boyle was admitted to the Privy Council of Ireland and appointed Lord High Treasurer of Ireland. He inherited additional titles from his grandfather in 1698, becoming Earl of Burlington and Earl of Cork. Within the same year, he was appointed a Lord of the Bedchamber.
In 1699, Boyle was appointed Lord Lieutenant of the West Riding of Yorkshire. In 1702, he was admitted to the Privy Council of England. He died in 1704, and his titles were succeeded by his eldest son, Richard Boyle.
**Personal Life and Family**
On 26 January 1688, Boyle married Juliana Noel at Ely House. Juliana (1672–1750) was the only daughter and heiress of Hon. Henry Noel, himself the second son of Baptist Noel, 3rd Viscount Campden, by his third wife, Hester Wotton.
Charles Boyle and Juliana Noel had five surviving children:
- Lady Elizabeth Boyle (1690–1751), who married Sir Henry Bedingfeld, 3rd Baronet.
- Richard Boyle (1694–1753), who became the 3rd Earl of Burlington.
- Lady Juliana Boyle (c. 1697–1739), married Charles Bruce, 3rd Earl of Ailesbury.
- Lady Jane Boyle (1699–1780), who died unmarried.
- Lady Henrietta Boyle (1701–1746), who married Henry Boyle, 1st Earl of Shannon, in 1726.
Following his death, Boyle's widow, as Dowager Countess, served as a Lady of the Bedchamber at the court of Queen Anne.
