Introduction
Michael Evan Victor Baillie, 3rd Baron Burton DL, was born on 27 June 1924 and died on 30 May 2013. He was a British peer and the son of George Evan Michael Baillie and Maud Louisa Emma Cavendish. His maternal grandfather was the 9th Duke of Devonshire.
Baillie received his education at Eton College. During the Second World War, he served as a lieutenant in the Scots Guards. In 1962, he inherited the title of Baron Burton from his paternal grandmother, Nellie Baillie, the 2nd Baroness Burton.
His public service included being an elected county councillor for Inverness-shire from 1948 to 1975 and serving as a justice of the peace (J.P.) from 1961 to 1975. Baillie resided at Dochgarroch Lodge in Inverness, where he passed away in 2013.
Regarding his family life, Baillie married Elizabeth Ursula Foster Wise on 28 April 1948. Elizabeth was deceased by 1993. The marriage produced six children, and the couple divorced in 1977. In 1978, he married Coralie Denise Cliffe of Natal, South Africa; she died on 17 January 2022.
Baillie was involved in Freemasonry in Scotland. He was initiated into Lodge Old Inverness Kilwinning St. John's, No.6, in Inverness-shire in 1951 and served as the lodge's master from 1978 to 1979. He was also a member of Lodge Sir Robert Moray, No.1641, in Edinburgh. On 25 November 1993, he was installed as Grand Master Mason at Freemasons' Hall, 96 George Street, Edinburgh.
