Introduction
William Townshend was born on 9 June 1702 and died on 29 January 1738. He was a British Member of Parliament and was the third son of Charles Townshend, the 2nd Viscount Townshend, and his first wife, the Honorable Elizabeth Pelham. His family included several notable relatives: his brothers were Charles Townshend, the 3rd Viscount Townshend; Thomas Townshend; and Roger Townshend. His nephews included George Townshend, the 1st Marquess Townshend, and Charles Townshend.
In 1723, William Townshend was elected to the House of Commons representing Great Yarmouth. He maintained this parliamentary seat continuously until his death in 1738. During his lifetime, he resided at Honingham Hall in Norfolk.
In May 1725, Townshend married Henrietta Powlett, the daughter of Lord William Powlett. The marriage produced a son named Charles, who was later created Baron Bayning in 1797.
William Townshend died at the age of 35 in January 1738. His wife, Henrietta, survived him until her death in 1755.
