Introduction

Lord George Augustus Cavendish (circa 1727 – 2 May 1794) was a British nobleman and politician, a member of the House of Cavendish. He was born in London as the second son of William Cavendish, 3rd Duke of Devonshire, and his wife, Catherine Hoskins. His godfather was King George II.

Cavendish received education in Chesterfield and at St John's College, Cambridge. In 1753, he inherited Holker Hall, then located in Lancashire, from his maternal cousin Sir William Lowther, 3rd Baronet. During his ownership, he undertook landscape modifications including replanting the park and introducing various trees, notably Lebanese cedar trees which he sourced from a friend in Lebanon.

His political career began in 1751 when he entered Parliament representing Weymouth and Melcombe Regis. In 1754, he succeeded to the family's parliamentary seat for Derbyshire, which he held almost continuously until his death in 1794, with only one interruption.

Cavendish held a series of governmental and local offices. He served as Comptroller of the Household from 1761 to 1762 and was appointed to the Privy Council in 1762. From 1766 to 1782, he was the Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire, overseeing regional military and civil affairs.

He died suddenly in May 1794 while traveling back to London from Holker Hall. Following his death, Holker Hall was inherited by his younger brothers.
