Introduction

Prince Sigismund of Prussia (German: Franz Friedrich Sigismund) was born on 15 September 1864 at the New Palace in Potsdam, Germany. He was the fourth child and third son of Crown Prince Frederick of Prussia and Victoria, Princess Royal of the United Kingdom. His paternal grandfather was William I of Prussia, who later became the German Emperor, and his maternal grandfather was Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom.

Prince Sigismund was known by the nickname "Sigi" within his family. His parents were the heir apparent to the Prussian throne; his father, Crown Prince Frederick, would succeed as German Emperor Frederick III, and his mother, Victoria, was the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria.

He died on 18 June 1866 at the age of twenty-one months due to meningitis. His death occurred at the New Palace in Potsdam. He was subsequently interred in the royal mausoleum of the Friedenskirche in Potsdam. At the time of his death, his mother experienced intense grief, compounded by the circumstances of the period when his father, then Crown Prince, was engaged in leading the Prussian army against Austria in the Austro-Prussian War. The military campaign had depleted medical resources, preventing his mother from seeking adequate treatment for him.

Prince Sigismund was notable as the first grandchild of Queen Victoria to die. This event occurred nearly 115 years before the death of his last surviving cousin, Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone, who passed away in 1981.

There are existing portraits of Prince Sigismund held at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

No additional details regarding his ancestry or further biographical information are provided beyond those outlined.
