Rong Zhiwan

Rong Zhiyan, born in China, is the daughter of Rong Yiren. Rong Yiren played an important role in the development of modern Chinese industry and commerce and was a well-known industrialist. Rong Zhiyan comes from a prominent family; her father Rong Yiren holds a significant place in Chinese economic history, and her older brother Rong Zhijian is also known for his achievements in the business field.

Regarding her family background, Rong Zhiyan’s married family, the Ma family, is regarded as one of the three major families in Macau. Her father-in-law, Ma Wanquing, served as Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and held considerable political and social influence. Rong Zhiyan’s marriage was not only a union of personal love but also carried special political and economic significance, serving as a bridge connecting Mainland China and Macau.

In August 1973, through the efforts of Ye Jianying and Liao Chengzhi, Rong Zhiyan met and fell in love with Ma Youheng. The involvement of Ye Jianying and Liao Chengzhi aimed to strengthen exchanges and cooperation between Mainland China and Macau. Under the witness of both families, their relationship gradually developed into marriage.

The engagement ceremony was held in Beijing in August 1973, presided over by leaders including Ye Jianying and Liao Chengzhi, and was acknowledged by then Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai. Some domestic relatives and friends were invited to attend. The wedding was subsequently conducted according to Macau traditional customs in Macau, with a formal ceremony held later, although detailed information was not made public. This marriage was not only a familial union but also symbolized the deepening of grassroots exchanges between Mainland China and Macau.

Rong Zhiyan’s marriage affair holds certain historical significance and is regarded as a model of civilian exchanges between Mainland China and Macau. It reflected the increasing cooperation and connection between the two regions at that time. Through this alliance, the integration of these two prominent families also promoted regional economic and social ties, laying the groundwork for future cooperation.
