Introduction

Geli Fei, whose family name is unknown, was born in the 14th century. She originally hailed from Qinfeng County, Daming Prefecture. She was the daughter of General and Jin Yiwei Commander Ge Chuan, and also a consort of Ming Taizu Zhu Yuanzhang. Among her siblings, she had a sister named Ge Meiren, who was close to her.

In the year 1386 (the 19th year of Hongwu), Ge Fei and her sister entered the imperial palace together. In 1388 (the 21st year of Hongwu), Ge Fei gave birth to the crown prince Zhu Chong. In February 1393 (the 26th year of Hongwu), Ge Fei was granted the title of Libo (Beautified Consort), at the same time Li Shi was conferred as Xianfei (Virtuous Consort), and Liu Shi as Huifei (Graceful Consort). In December of that year, Ge Fei gave birth to a son, Zhu Nan; however, the identity of his mother is uncertain, and records differ regarding his death and the date of her passing.

In 1398 (the 31st year of Hongwu), Emperor Taizu of Ming died. Ge Fei’s sister, Ge Meiren, was buried alongside her. Details of Ge Fei’s subsequent life are unclear. Zhu Chong was later dispatched during the Yongle period to Henan Prefecture to oversee affairs, and is believed to have died around 1414. Regarding Ge Fei’s tomb, there are different accounts: one states that it is located in the southern part of Nanjing, in a land used for ancestral rites maintained annually by the Eastern City; another suggests it is 35 li south of Daming County, where her descendants hold spring and autumn memorial ceremonies. Historical records also indicate she was buried together with her sister, and her tomb bears an inscribed stele.
