Introduction
Lady Davina Elizabeth Alice Benedikte Windsor was born on 19 November 1977 at St Mary's Hospital in London. She was baptized on 19 February 1978 at Barnwell Parish Church near her family residence, Barnwell Manor in Northamptonshire. Her godparents include Captain Mark Phillips, the Duke of Buccleuch, Elisabeth, Lady Camoys, Susan Wigley, Roger Wellesley Smith, and Caroline, Baroness Rosenørn-Lehn. She was raised in Kensington Palace and attended Kensington Preparatory School located in Notting Hill. Later, she studied at St George's School in Ascot. She obtained a degree in media studies from the University of the West of England.
Lady Davina married Gary Christie Lewis on 31 July 2004. Lewis was born on 15 August 1970 and is of Māori descent. He is a carpenter and proprietor of a property renovation business, with an interest in surfing. The couple had known each other for four years before their relationship became public; they met during a holiday in Bali and kept their relationship private for several years. Lewis is the son of Larry Lewis, a Māori builder who participated in the Golden Shears sheep-shearing competition in 1982. His uncle is Witi Ihimaera, a notable Māori author known for writing "The Whale Rider," which was adapted into a film.
Significantly, Gary Lewis is recognized as the first person of known Māori descent to marry a member of the British royal family, or to marry the daughter of a British prince. Due to Lady Davina’s legitimate descent through the male line of King George V and her place in the line of succession to the British throne, the marriage required formal approval under the Royal Marriages Act 1772. On 20 July 2004, the Queen-in-Council approved the marriage. The wedding was held in the private chapel of Kensington Palace, her childhood home, with attendance limited to close family and friends, excluding other members of the royal family.
Following their marriage, Lady Davina was known as Lady Davina Lewis until their divorce in 2018. The couple had two children: a daughter named Senna Kowhai, born on 22 June 2010, and a son named Tāne Mahuta, born on 25 May 2012. Tāne Mahuta was named after the giant kauri tree in Northland, New Zealand's Waipoua Forest. Lady Davina also served as stepmother to Lewis's son Ari, born in 1992, from his previous relationship.
Until 26 March 2015, Tāne Mahuta was ahead of his sister in the line of succession to the British throne, reflecting traditional male primogeniture rules. The Succession to the Crown Act 2013, enacted across Commonwealth realms in 2015, altered this order, allowing girls to succeed before their brothers. As a result, Senna Kowhai moved up in the line of succession, becoming the 28th, while Tāne Mahuta became the 29th.
Lady Davina does not perform official royal duties but participates in family events such as royal weddings and receptions. Notably, she and her then-husband attended the Queen’s reception for the New Zealand All Blacks at Buckingham Palace in 2005 and attended Prince William's wedding in 2011.
