Introduction
Henry Ulick Lascelles, 5th Earl of Harewood, was born on 21 August 1846 and died on 6 October 1929. He was a British peer, the son of Henry Lascelles, 4th Earl of Harewood. His childhood residence was Goldsborough Hall in Goldsborough, North Yorkshire, a property used for the heirs-in-waiting for Harewood House. During his lifetime, the Lascelles family maintained significant landholdings in Barbados.
He served in the British Army initially as a captain in the Grenadier Guards. Subsequently, he served part-time as an officer in the Yorkshire Hussars Yeomanry, which was incorporated into the Territorial Army in 1908. He was lieutenant colonel commanding the regiment from 1881 to 1898, and became honorary colonel from 1898 to 1913. His military career earned him the Territorial Decoration (T.D.) in 1909. Additionally, he held positions as colonel and yeomanry aide-de-camp to Queen Victoria starting in 1897, continued in that role under King Edward VII throughout his reign, and served as aide-de-camp to King George V from 1910 until his death in 1929.
On 24 June 1892, he succeeded to the titles of Earl of Harewood, Viscount Lascelles, and Baron Harewood. He was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of the West Riding of Yorkshire on 26 February 1900, and later served as Lord Lieutenant of the West Riding of Yorkshire from 4 June 1904 until 4 December 1927.
In 1901, King Edward VII selected Lord Harewood for a diplomatic mission to communicate the King's accession to the governments of France, Spain, and Portugal. In recognition of his service, he was appointed a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) in 1908 and was elevated to Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO) in 1922.
He married Lady Florence Katharine Bridgeman on 5 November 1881 at St Peter's Church, Eaton Square, London. She was the daughter of Orlando Bridgeman, 3rd Earl of Bradford. Their marriage produced three children:
- Henry George Charles Lascelles (1882–1947), who became the 6th Earl of Harewood. He married Princess Mary, the only daughter of King George V and Queen Mary, and was an ancestor of Queen Elizabeth II.
- Lady Margaret Selina Lascelles (1883–1978), who married Gustavus Hamilton-Russell, 9th Viscount Boyne, and had issue.
- Major Edward Cecil Lascelles (1887–1935), who married Joan Balfour, a granddaughter of George Campbell, 8th Duke of Argyll.
Henry Ulick Lascelles was part of the aristocratic lineage with ancestors traced through his family hierarchy; specific details are not provided here.
