Introduction
Pan Yang was born in Tieling, Liaoning Province. Her ancestral home is Jinan, Shandong; her great-grandfather migrated north from Shandong to Northeast China in the 19th century. She comes from a theatrical family — her grandfather Pan Linsheng and grandmother Wang Jingping were pingju (a regional form of Chinese opera) performers in northern Liaoning. Her father, Pan Changjiang, is a well-known entertainer, and her mother, Yang Yun, is also a performing artist. Her uncle, Pan Changyong, is a producer. Raised in a home full of artistic atmosphere, Pan Yang showed strong vocal talent from an early age and was a leading figure in her school’s arts programs.
Because of her father’s job transfers, she moved to Beijing with her parents during childhood. After finishing elementary school in Beijing, she completed her high school education in Vancouver, Canada. Rather than studying business management, she spent two years abroad studying Western music. She returned to China in 2003 to study vocal performance at the People’s Liberation Army Academy of Arts, from which she graduated. After graduating she decided to pursue a career in the performing arts; her father initially opposed the idea but eventually gave his support.
Pan Yang’s entertainment career began in 2006, when she wrote the lyrics for and sang the end theme “My Summer With You” for the comedy film Don’t Mess With the Kid. That same year she made her first leading television role in the drama Elevator, playing the pretty but outspoken receptionist Gao Meimei. In 2007 she took part in an outdoor music gala on CCTV’s variety channel and performed a crossover duet with her father, Pan Changjiang, called “Good People, Good Dreams.” In 2008 she released her first solo album, Da Daoli (literally “Great Truths”), officially debuting as a singer. Also that year she starred as Qian Duoduo in the drama Clear Waters, Blue Skies. She has held important roles in a number of other film and TV works, including Able Man Feng Tiangui, Loving Each Other, and several rural comedies.
From 2009 to 2011 Pan Yang continued to broaden her experience by appearing on multiple variety shows, gala performances, and films, frequently collaborating with her father. She played the female lead in the stage play Love Fate: The Subway, showing steadily maturing performances. At the same time she has been active in charity work, serving as a “Love Ambassador” and taking part in multiple fundraising activities.
In 2012 she appeared in the costume drama The Clever Little Kongkong and the military drama Fire-Blue Blade. In 2013 she won the final of Zhejiang TV’s reality show I’m Not a Star. In 2014 she released the single “Find a Companion for Love” and starred in a series of films. She also appeared in other TV dramas such as Spy · Lotus and A Home with a Tiger Wife.
From 2015 to the present, Pan Yang has remained active in television, music, and variety programs, participating in numerous dramas and films. In 2021 she starred in the TV dramas Green Hills Cannot Hide and The Warm Taste, and has appeared in several Spring Festival galas and other variety shows. In 2023 the TV drama Flowers Bloom on the Stone, in which she appears, started filming. Her body of work includes multiple TV dramas, film appearances, music singles, and stage plays, and she frequently appears at public events.
