Introduction
Lieutenant-General Sir William Henry Pringle GCB was born on 21 August 1772 and died on 23 December 1840. He was a British Army officer and a politician who served as a Member of Parliament for two constituencies in Cornwall.
Pringle was the eldest son of Major-General Henry Pringle of Dublin. His early education was acquired through private instruction and at Trinity College Dublin. His military career commenced with his joining the British Army as a cornet. Over time, he advanced through various ranks, ultimately attaining the rank of Colonel of the 64th Foot in 1816. Subsequently, he was promoted to Lieutenant-General, and in 1837, he was transferred as Colonel for life to the 45th Regiment of Foot.
Throughout his military service, Pringle received several honors. He was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) in 1815 and was elevated to Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (GCB) in 1834.
In addition to his military career, William Henry Pringle was involved in politics. He served as Member of Parliament for St Germans from 1812 to 1818. Following this, he was MP for Liskeard from 1818 until 1832.
Pringle married Harriet Hester Eliot on 20 May 1806. Harriet was the daughter and heiress of Hon. Edward James Eliot. The marriage produced one son and four daughters.
He died in 1840. His correspondence and personal papers are preserved at the John Rylands Library in Manchester.
