Huang Fan is the daughter of Huang Ju, former Vice Premier of the State Council of China and member of the CCP Politburo Standing Committee.
In her personal life, Huang Fan first married the son of Ren Shigang, registering their marriage at the Jing’an District Civil Affairs Bureau in Shanghai. The couple had one daughter and one son. After their divorce, in 1995 she married her second husband, Fang Yiwei, in the United States.
Her second husband, Fang Yiwei, was an American citizen and graduate of the University of California, Berkeley. He served as Chairman of the San Francisco–Shanghai Sister City Committee and was also a former Chairman of the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Board. He came from a family with strong influence in both Chinese and American circles. His father, Fang Dachuan, had served as editor-in-chief of *Young China Morning Post*, a paper founded by Sun Yat-sen, and later established mainstream newspapers in the U.S. such as *Asian Week* and *The Independent*. His mother, Florence Fang (Fang Li Bangqin), is Chairwoman of the Pan Asia Group and is well known for her philanthropy in education and cultural exchange. She donated $3 million in 2008 to help UC Berkeley build the East Asian Library, $2.1 million the same year to Peking University to construct the School of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, and $1 million in 2013 to support the “100,000 Strong” initiative promoting U.S.–China cultural and educational exchange. She also became an Honorary Trustee of Peking University.
Through her marriage to Fang Yiwei, Huang Fan became linked to influential networks in both China and the United States. She herself has kept a low profile, and most public knowledge of her comes from the prominence of her father and her husband’s family background and contributions.
