Introduction
Sir James Hamlyn Williams, 3rd Baronet, was born on 25 November 1790 and died on 10 October 1861. He was a Welsh politician associated with the Whig party. Williams was educated at Winchester College. He held residences at Edwinsford in Carmarthenshire and Clovelly Court in Devon.
Williams served as a major in the 7th Queen's Own Hussars during the Peninsular War. In the realm of politics, he sought election to the UK Parliament representing Carmarthenshire. During the 1831 general election, he was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP), following his father and grandfather in this parliamentary seat. He ran as a Whig and was successful in this election but was defeated in the subsequent 1832 election. Williams regained the seat in the 1835 election but was again defeated in the 1837 election.
During his time in Parliament, Williams advocated for the immediate abolition of slavery. He also supported the removal of taxes on various staple goods. Later in his life, Williams dedicated more of his attention to hunting activities. He held honorary positions as a gamekeeper for the estates at Caio, Mallaine, and Talley. Additionally, he served as the Sheriff of Carmarthenshire.
