Introduction
Thomas Thynne, 2nd Marquess of Bath, was born on 25 January 1765. He was the eldest son of Thomas Thynne, 1st Marquess of Bath, and Lady Elizabeth Cavendish-Bentinck. He succeeded to the title of Marquess of Bath in 1796 upon the death of his father.
He received education at Winchester College and was admitted to St John's College, Cambridge, in 1785. He graduated with a Master of Arts degree in 1787.
Thynne's political career included serving as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Weobley from 1786 to 1790 and for Bath from 1790 to 1796. He was a member of the Tory party. In 1819, he became the Lord Lieutenant of Somerset, a position he held until 1837. On 16 July 1823, he was invested as a Knight of the Garter.
As a benefactor, Thynne contributed to the development of the town of Frome, where he relinquished land and buildings to facilitate the construction of a new road leading south from the town center, which is now known as Bath Street. Additionally, he allocated land for allotments intended for one hundred families. Contemporary accounts note that he was approachable and attentive to the concerns of local residents.
Thomas Thynne died on 27 March 1837 at the age of 72. He was buried at Longleat House, his family estate. His eldest son, Thomas Thynne, Viscount Weymouth, predeceased him by approximately two months, and as a result, the title was passed to his second son, Henry Frederick Thynne, who became the 3rd Marquess of Bath.
Thynne was married to the Honourable Isabella Elizabeth Byng on 14 April 1794. She was the daughter of George Byng, 4th Viscount Torrington. Together, they had eleven children:
- Lady Elizabeth Thynne (1795–1866), who married John Campbell, 1st Earl Cawdor
- Thomas Thynne, Viscount Weymouth (1796–1837), who married Harriet Matilda Robbins
- Henry Frederick Thynne, 3rd Marquess of Bath (1797–1837), who married Hon. Harriet Baring
- Lord John Thynne (1798–1881), married Anne Beresford

- Lord Edward Thynne (1807–1884), married Elizabeth Mellish and Cecilia Gore
- Lord George Thynne (1808–1832)
