Introduction

Concubine Han, her birth and death years are unknown, but she is believed to have lived around the 14th century. Her given name has not been recorded; she was one of the concubines of Emperor Taizu of the Ming Dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang. Some sources refer to her as an imperial noble lady. She was the biological mother of Zhu Zhi, the 15th son of Emperor Taizu and Duke of Liao. There are limited historical records about her personal life. On the fifteenth day of the second lunar month in the tenth year of the Hongwu reign (March 24, 1377), Concubine Han gave birth to Zhu Zhi. The "Records of Emperor Taizu's Reign" and the "History of Ming" both refer to her simply as "Concubine." The "Heavenly Vault Jade Directory" lists Han and other palace women among the Imperial Noble Ladies, but the reason is unclear. Currently, her date of death is unknown; it is also possible that she was buried with Emperor Taizu after his death.

Late Ming and early Qing scholar Mao Qiling recorded in "Sheng Chao Tong Shi Shi Yi Ji" that more than forty consorts and concubines were buried with Ming Emperor Xiaoling, but Han is not mentioned among them. Some scholars believe she may have passed away during Emperor Taizu's lifetime, while others think she might have been buried with him after his death.

On September 26, the sixth year of the TianShun reign (1462), the "Records of Emperor Yingzong of Ming" documented the death of Princess Han Shan, the fourteenth daughter of Emperor Taizu, who died at the age of eighty-two. She was born in the 13th year of Hongwu (1380), and her mother was "Goryeo Consort Han." The "Jiangdu County Annals" state that Princess Han Shan lost her mother early and was favored by Emperor Taizu. It is generally believed by scholars that Concubine Han and Goryeo Consort Han are the same person, and according to "Guo Yue," among the imperial consorts, there was only one Han.
