Introduction
Agnes Georgiana Elizabeth Duff, Countess Fife (née Hay), was born on 12 May 1829 in Dublin, Ireland. She was the third child of William Hay, 18th Earl of Erroll, and Elizabeth FitzClarence.
On 16 March 1846, she married James Duff, the son of General Hon. Sir Alexander Duff and Anne Stein, at the British Embassy in Paris, France. James Duff later succeeded his uncle to become the Earl of Fife in 1857.
The couple had several children, including:
- Lady Anne Elizabeth Clementina Duff (born 16 August 1847), who married John Townshend, 5th Marquess Townshend, on 17 October 1865. They had two children.
- Lady Ida Louisa Alice Duff (born 11 December 1848), who married Adrian Elias Hope on 3 June 1867. They had one daughter before divorcing. She later married William Wilson, a London stockbroker, on 20 September 1880.
- Alexander William George Duff (born 10 November 1849), who married Louise, Princess Royal, the eldest daughter of Edward, Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, and Queen Alexandra, on 27 July 1889. He was created the Duke of Fife in 1889.
- Lady Alexina Duff (born 20 March 1851), who married Henry Aubrey Coventry on 2 July 1870.
- Lady Agnes Cecil Emmeline Duff (born 1852), who married three times: first to George Robert Hay-Drummond on 4 October 1871; second to Herbert Flower on 5 August 1876; and thirdly to Alfred Cooper on 4 July 1882. Her descendants include former British prime minister David Cameron.
- Lady Mary Hamilton Duff (born 20 February 1854), who died shortly after birth on 20 March 1854.
