Introduction
Elizabeth Porter Todd Edwards was born on November 13, 1813, in Lexington, Kentucky, to Robert Todd and Elizabeth Parker Todd. In 1832, she married Ninian Wirt Edwards, the son of a former governor of Illinois. The Edwards family resided in a prominent residence on Aristocracy Hill in Springfield, Illinois, which hosted social gatherings attended by Springfield's social elite. Elizabeth Edwards invited her three sisters, including Mary Todd, to reside with her.
Mary Todd met Abraham Lincoln during a social gathering hosted at the Edwards residence. The couple married on November 4, 1842. Elizabeth Edwards was present during Lincoln's presidential inauguration, residing in the White House alongside her sister.
In 1862, Elizabeth returned to Springfield to provide support to Mary Lincoln following the death of her son Willie Lincoln. Throughout her lifetime, Elizabeth served as a guardian for her sister Mary for many years.
In 1875, Mary Lincoln was committed to an insane asylum, an event that Elizabeth opposed. Following a legal trial, Mary was released from the asylum into Elizabeth’s care. Mary Lincoln died in 1882 at Elizabeth's residence. Elizabeth Edwards passed away on February 22, 1888, and was interred at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois.
