Wu Jiani was born on February 22, 1983, and is originally from Shanghai. She received her education at the Beijing Dance Academy, during which she won first place in the Beijing University Student Art Festival Dance Competition and the "JVC" National Youth Dance Competition for outstanding performance. She has also participated numerous times in large-scale artistic performances on China Central Television.

She made her first appearance in the entertainment industry in 2001, starring in the TV drama "Urban Mountain Song" as Dong native girl Bao Ni. In 2002, she appeared in several works including the costume drama "Wandering the World," the historical martial arts series "Hero," and the ancient martial arts drama "Rulai Shen Zhang," portraying different characters. In 2003, she played Tao Xiaofang in the urban emotional drama "Male Talent, Female Beauty," and also appeared as Ye Jia in the same year in the urban emotional drama "Fleur de Lis."
