Introduction

Lord Nicholas Charles Edward Jonathan Windsor was born on July 25, 1970, at King's College Hospital in Denmark Hill, London. He is the youngest child of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, and Katharine, Duchess of Kent. He has an older brother, Lord St Andrews, and a sister, Lady Helen Taylor. His baptism took place later that year at Windsor Castle, with his godparents including Charles, Prince of Wales (later King Charles III), and Donald Coggan, who was at the time the Archbishop of York and later Archbishop of Canterbury.

In relation to his religious affiliations, Lord Nicholas's mother converted to the Catholic Church in 1994. He converted to Catholicism himself in 2001. On July 14, 2011, he was named an Honorary Vice-president of the Friends of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham, an Anglican Ordinariate within the Catholic Church. He serves as a patron of the Society of King Charles the Martyr, an organization that is predominantly Anglican, which he associates with his Catholic faith. In writings for the Society, he emphasizes Charles's virtues, including his personal piety, devotion, ecumenical understanding, patronage of the arts, and martyrdom.

Lord Nicholas has publicly expressed strong views on abortion, describing it as a societal threat comparable to or worse than terrorism, specifically stating it is "worse than al-Qaeda."

Regarding his personal life, Lord Nicholas met Paola Doimi de Lupis Frankopan Šubić Zrinski at a party in New York City in 1999 celebrating the Millennium. He became engaged in July 2006. They married through a civil ceremony on October 19, 2006, at a London register office, followed by a religious ceremony on November 4, 2006, at the Church of St. Stephen of the Abyssinians in Vatican City. As a result of this marriage, Paola became Lady Nicholas Windsor. The marriage received formal approval from Queen Elizabeth II under the Royal Marriages Act 1772. It was noted publicly as the first overt marriage within the rites of the Catholic Church of a member of the British royal family since Queen Mary I, and the first royal marriage to occur within Vatican City.

The couple reportedly separated in September 2025. They have three sons: Albert Louis Philip Edward Windsor (born 2007), Leopold Ernest Augustus Guelph Windsor (born 2009), and Louis Arthur Nicholas Felix Windsor (born 2014). The baptism of Albert was notable as the first royal child to be baptized as a Catholic since 1688.

Lord Nicholas Windsor has authored articles on social and political issues, including opinion pieces in The Telegraph and the Catholic Herald. In these, he has articulated his views against abortion, equating its societal impact to the abolition of slavery.
