Introduction

Sir Alfred Cooper (28 January 1838 – 3 March 1908) was an English surgeon and clubman active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His patients included Albert Edward, Prince of Wales. Cooper was born in Bracondale, Norfolk, England. His father was William Cooper, a barrister, and his mother was Anna, née Marsh. Cooper received his education at Merchant Taylors' School.

As a medical professional, Cooper specialized in venereal disease. This specialization provided him with access to and insight into the social and moral perspectives of the late Victorian aristocracy. On 17 May 1899, he was appointed a Surgeon-Lieutenant-Colonel in the Loyal Suffolk Hussars, a Yeomanry regiment. The regiment was mobilized for active service during the Second Boer War (1899–1902). Cooper served as the senior medical officer until he resigned his commission on 8 November 1902.

In recognition of his contributions to medicine, Cooper was knighted in the 1902 Coronation Honours. The knighthood was conferred by King Edward VII at Buckingham Palace on 24 October 1902.

Cooper was married to Lady Agnes Cecil Emmeline Duff, daughter of Agnes Duff, Countess Fife. Lady Agnes Duff was previously married to Viscount Dupplin, the eldest son of the 12th Earl of Kinnoull, with whom she had one daughter. Her second marriage was to Herbert Flower, brother of Cyril Flower, 1st Baron Battersea, and this marriage produced no issue. Lady Agnes Duff was the youngest daughter of James Duff, 5th Earl Fife, and Lady Agnes Hay, herself daughter of William Hay, 18th Earl of Erroll, and granddaughter of King William IV of the United Kingdom through his mistress, Dorothy Jordan.

Lady Agnes Duff's brother was Alexander Duff, 1st Duke of Fife. Alexander Duff was married to Louise, Princess Royal, the eldest daughter of King Edward VII.

Sir Alfred Cooper and Lady Agnes Duff had four children. Among their children was Duff Cooper, who later became the 1st Viscount Norwich.

Sir Alfred Cooper died in Menton, France, on 3 March 1908.
