Introduction
Charles Compton Cavendish, 1st Baron Chesham (28 August 1793 – 12 November 1863), was a British politician associated with the Liberal party.
**Early life**
He was born in 1793 as the fourth son of George Augustus Henry Cavendish, 1st Earl of Burlington. His paternal grandfather was William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire, a former Prime Minister of Great Britain. Cavendish's mother was Lady Elizabeth Charlotte Elizabeth Boyle, who was the daughter of Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington, and 4th Earl of Cork. His maternal grandmother was Lady Elizabeth Compton, daughter of Charles Compton, 7th Earl of Northampton.
**Political career**
Cavendish's political career began in 1814 when, at the age of 21, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for Aylesbury. He held this seat until 1818. Subsequently, he represented Newtown from 1821 to 1830 and Yarmouth (Isle of Wight) from 1831 to 1832. From 1832 to 1841, he served as the MP for East Sussex, followed by a term representing Youghal from 1841 to 1847. His final parliamentary role was as the representative for Buckinghamshire from 1847 until 1857.
In 1858, Cavendish was elevated to the peerage as Baron Chesham of Chesham in the County of Buckingham.
**Personal life**
In 1814, he married Lady Catherine Susan Gordon, daughter of George Gordon, 9th Marquess of Huntly. The couple had three children:
- William George Cavendish, who succeeded as the 2nd Baron Chesham.
- Hon. Susan Sophia Cavendish, who married Thomas Trevor, 22nd Baron Dacre.
- Hon. Harriet Elizabeth Cavendish, who married George Byng, 2nd Earl of Strafford, as his second wife.
Charles Cavendish, 1st Baron Chesham, died in November 1863 at the age of 70. His titles were inherited by his son William.
