Introduction

Charlotte Townshend, Viscountess Townshend (died 3 September 1770), was a British peeress notable for holding titles in her own right. She was also known as Lady Charlotte Compton until 1749 and as Lady Ferrers of Chartley from 1749 to 1764.

Born into the family of James Compton, 5th Earl of Northampton, and Elizabeth Shirley, suo jure 15th Baroness Ferrers of Chartley, Charlotte was their only surviving child. Her mother’s barony of Ferrers of Chartley had fallen into abeyance upon her death in 1741. In 1749, the abeyance was terminated in Charlotte's favor, elevating her to the title of 16th Baroness Ferrers of Chartley.

In 1754, she succeeded her father as the baroness of Compton, thus acquiring the title of 7th Baroness Compton. In 1751, Charlotte married the Honorable George Townshend, who later became the fourth Viscount Townshend and first Marquess Townshend. Following her husband's succession to the viscountcy in 1764, she was styled as Viscountess Townshend.

Charlotte's death occurred in September 1770. Her titles were inherited by her eldest son, George Townshend, who was subsequently created Earl of Leicester in 1784 and later became the second Marquess Townshend. Her husband, George Townshend, outlived her by more than three decades, passing away in 1807.
