Emily Hatoyama

Emily Hatoyama, born Emily Takami (高見エミリー) on February 11, 1955, is a Japanese essayist, former actress, and model. She is known for her career in entertainment and her familial connections in Japanese political history.

Early Life and Family:

She was born in Japan to Sadako Takami, her Japanese mother, and J. K. (Jimmy) Beard, an Australian father. Beard served as a sergeant in the Australian Army and had been stationed in Japan as part of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force. Some sources have indicated that her family remained in Japan due to restrictions on Japanese immigration by the Australian government, but this barrier was abolished several years before her birth. After leaving the Army, Beard was employed by a trading company in Japan.

Entertainment Career:

Emily Hatoyama began her career in the entertainment industry as a child model during the 1960s. During this period, she was known by different names, including Emily Takami, her mother's maiden surname, and Emily Jane Beard. She appeared as a cover model for "Shōjo Friend," a magazine published by Kodansha. In the 1970s, she transitioned into acting and also debuted as a singer in 1972. Her older sister, Marjorie Beard, also pursued acting under the name Risa Takami and appeared in Toei films and commercials during the mid-1960s.

Marriage and Family:

Emily met Kunio Hatoyama, a first cousin of her future husband, at her older sister's wedding. Kunio Hatoyama was a grandson of Ichirō Hatoyama, a former Prime Minister of Japan. She was engaged to Kunio Hatoyama in February 1973, when she was 17 years old. Following their marriage, she retired from her career in modeling and acting. Together, they had three children. Emily's public profile and popularity played a role in Kunio Hatoyama's election to the House of Representatives in 1976.
