Introduction

Gholamhossein Mohammadi, born circa 1943 in Golpayegan, Isfahan Province, Iran, is an Iranian Shia Islamic cleric who has held the position of chief of staff of the Office of the Supreme Leader of Iran since 1989. He is also known by the honorific title "Hujjat al-Islam Golpayegani."

His father, Abul Qasim Mohammadi Golpayegani, was recognized as an Islamic scholar and commentator, and served as the Imam of Friday Prayer in Golpayegan. The elder Mohammadi Golpayegani was active in political opposition against Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and participated in events at the Feyziyeh School, which was historically significant as a center of Shia scholarship and political activism.

Gholamhossein Mohammadi Golpayegani is also a poet; among his published works is a poem titled "Persian Gulf," which he regards as one of his prominent compositions.

He has familial ties to Iran's political leadership; specifically, one of his sons married Boshra Khamenei, the daughter of Ali Khamenei, Iran's second Supreme Leader. Boshra Khamenei and one of Mohammadi Golpayegani's grandchildren from this marriage died during the assassination attempt on Ali Khamenei in 2026.
