Frederic Timothy Murphy

Frederic Timothy Murphy was born on September 4, 1884, in Boston, Massachusetts. He was the son of Patrick Francis Murphy (1858–1931), who owned the Mark Cross Company, a business specializing in the sale of fine leather goods, and Anna Elizabeth Ryan (circa 1858–1932). Murphy had two siblings: Gerald Clery Murphy (1888–1964) and Esther Murphy Strachey (1897–1962).

Murphy attended Yale University, graduating in the class of 1908. During World War I, he served with the Tank Corps in France. His military service included participation in the Battle of the Somme, a significant engagement in the conflict. He was seriously wounded during this battle. In recognition of his service, Murphy was awarded the Cross of the Legion of Honor by the French government.

In 1920, he married Noël Haskins (1896–1982). Murphy died on May 23, 1924, as a result of complications from his war injuries.

Following his death, Noël Haskins purchased a house in the village of Orgeval, located in the Yvelines department northeast of Paris. The house was situated near the Saint-Germain-en-Laye Old Communal Cemetery, where Murphy was interred. During the period of World War II, Haskins served with the Comité Américain de Secours Civil, a humanitarian organization. She chose not to leave her house in Orgeval due to her desire to remain near her husband's gravesite. Consequently, she was deported to an internment camp in Vittel during the war.
