Introduction

Anna Eleanor Roosevelt Seagraves (née Dall), born on March 25, 1927, is an American librarian, educator, historian, and editor. She is the eldest grandchild of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States, and Eleanor Roosevelt, a prominent First Lady and diplomat. Her parents were Anna Roosevelt Dall and her first husband, Curtis Bean Dall.

Seagraves was named after her mother, Anna Roosevelt Dall, and her maternal grandmother, Eleanor Roosevelt. During her childhood, she was affectionately known as "Sistie," "Ellie," or "Eleanor." Following her parents' separation in 1933 and their divorce in 1934, she, her mother, and her brother Curtis moved into the White House with her grandparents. Her mother later remarried twice, and her younger half-brother, John Roosevelt Boettiger, was born in 1939.

Seagraves attended Reed College for three years prior to her marriage. She later earned a Master of Library Science degree in 1964 from the State University of New York at Geneseo. Throughout her life, she has experienced firsthand events from the Roosevelt White House years, including witnessing her grandmother Eleanor Roosevelt's diplomatic work and participating in annual events such as the Val-Kill picnic for delinquent boys, where she assisted Mrs. Roosevelt.

Her career has focused on librarianship, education, and historical preservation. Seagraves has served as an editor for publications including "Voyages of Commerce and Discovery," based on the journals of Amasa Delano, published by Berkshire House Publishers in 1994. She also edited "The Val-Kill Cook Book," published by The Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val-Kill in 1984. Her efforts have centered around maintaining and promoting the causes supported by her grandmother, Eleanor Roosevelt.

In addition to her professional pursuits, Seagraves has been actively involved in Democratic Party activities within her community. She publicly endorsed Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential campaign. As of 2023, she is residing in Maryland with her husband. She is reported to be 98 years old.

Seagraves was married on July 7, 1948, to Van H. Seagraves. The couple has three children: Nicholas Delano Seagraves, born August 7, 1949; David Delano Seagraves, born August 26, 1952; and Anna Fierst (née Anna Eleanor Seagraves), born August 16, 1955.
