Introduction
James Southall Wilson (1880–1963) was an American author and academic. He served as a professor at the University of Virginia and was the founder of the Virginia Quarterly Review. In 1931, Wilson organized the Southern Writers Conference.
Wilson was married to Julia Tyler, who was the granddaughter of President John Tyler. Julia Tyler was also a founding member of the Kappa Delta sorority.
Among Wilson’s contributions to academic and cultural life, he authored the college spirit song for the College of William & Mary, titled "Our Alma Mater." In 1906, he published a biography of the ornithologist Alexander Wilson.
