Zhang Kequn

Zhang Kequn was born in Berlin, Germany, with his exact birth date not specified. At the age of four, he returned to China with his parents and spent his childhood there. From 1948 to 1954, Zhang attended the affiliated elementary school of Tsinghua University. In 1961, he was admitted to the Department of Architecture at Tsinghua University, where he studied under architect and educator Liang Sicheng. After four years of study, he graduated in 1965.

After graduation, Zhang Kequn engaged in architectural design work, participating in multiple architectural projects throughout his career. Later, upon retirement, he moved to the United States and settled there. His family background is distinguished; his father, Zhang Wei, was one of the founders of Shenzhen University and is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and an international fellow of the Swedish Royal Academy of Engineering Sciences. His mother, Lu Shijia, was also one of the founders of Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and is a renowned fluid mechanics expert worldwide.

In his familial relations, his maternal grandfather, Shi Jinmo, is a famous modern Chinese clinical doctor, educator, and reformer, known as one of the four major doctors in Beijing. Additionally, his son, Gao Xiaosong, is involved in multiple professions including music, songwriting, production, directing, and hosting talk shows.

Regarding his scholarly works, Zhang Kequn has published several titles. In 2014, he released "How the Eastern Zhou Kingdoms Became a Porcupine" and "Bring a Book to the Summer Palace Corridor Painting and Stories," both published by China Machine Press. In 2013, he published "The Gemini Constellation: Stories of Tsinghua Scientists Zhang Wei and Lu Shijia." In 2010, he published "Morning Bell and Evening Drum," "Sketches of Old Beijing Architecture," and "Red Walls and Yellow Tiles," all by China Machine Press. Additionally, in 2006, he authored a monograph on fluid mechanics expert Lu Shijia titled "Flight: The Fluid Mechanics of Lu Shijia."
