Introduction
Robert Jocelyn, 4th Earl of Roden, was born on 22 November 1846. He was known as The Honourable Robert Jocelyn until 1854 and as Viscount Jocelyn from 1854 to 1870. He was an Anglo-Irish Conservative politician.
He was the eldest son of Robert Jocelyn, Viscount Jocelyn, who was the eldest son of Robert Jocelyn, 3rd Earl of Roden. His mother was Lady Frances Elizabeth Clavering-Cowper, the daughter of Peter Cowper, 5th Earl Cowper.
Jocelyn received his education at Eton College and later attended Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1868.
He gained the courtesy title of Viscount Jocelyn upon the death of his father in 1854. In 1870, he succeeded his grandfather to become the 4th Earl of Roden.
By 1876, he had retired from service in the Life Guards, as noted in a Vanity Fair caricature caption from that period.
In 1874, Roden was appointed a Lord-in-waiting, serving as a government whip in the House of Lords during Benjamin Disraeli's second Conservative administration. He held this position until his death in 1880.
He died in office on 10 January 1880 at the age of 33. Robert Jocelyn was unmarried at the time of his death. The earldom was succeeded by his uncle, the Honourable John Strange Jocelyn, who became the 5th Earl of Roden.
