Introduction
Takakuni Kuki was a daimyo in the late Edo period, serving as the 11th lord of the Mita Domain in Settsu Province. He was awarded the court ranks of Junior Fifth Rank, Lower Grade, Yamato no Kami, and Bungo no Kami. He was the 23rd head of the Kuki family.
His life and career are summarized as follows: Takakuni Kuki was born as the eldest son of the 10th lord, Takakuni Kuki. It is believed that his mother was a concubine. He succeeded to the position of daimyo upon the retirement of his father on June 19, 1843 (Tenpo 14). Later, on January 20, 1854 (Kaei 7), he handed over the family headship to his eldest son, Kuki Seritaka, and retired. He died on July 27, 1864 (Genji 1), at the age of 64.
Regarding his genealogy: his father was Takakuni Kuki (1781–1853). There are some uncertainties regarding his mother. His formal wife was Hachihime (the daughter of Hachisuka Harumasa), and his consort was Okada. He had several children, including his eldest son Kuki Seritaka (1824–1859). He also had multiple daughters; one was adopted by Keiin-in and became the wife of Makino Seisei. Another daughter was known as Nishi Go-in. Yet another daughter, called Oiwa no Kata, was the mother-in-law of his grandson Tsuneko, who became the wife of the 13th generation Enno of the Omotesenke school of tea ceremony.
