Introduction
John Peyto-Verney, 14th Baron Willoughby de Broke, and de jure 22nd Baron Latimer, was born on 5 August 1738. His birth name was John Verney. He was the son of Sir John Verney, KC, who lived from 1699 to 1741, and Abigail Harley. He inherited the titles of 14th Baron Willoughby de Broke and 22nd Baron Latimer in 1752 following the death of his uncle, Richard Verney, the 13th Baron Willoughby de Broke.
In 1761, he married Lady Louisa North on 8 October. Lady Louisa was the daughter of Francis North, 1st Earl of Guilford, and the sister of Lord North, who served as Prime Minister. John Peyto-Verney and Lady Louisa North had three children: John, Louisa, and Henry.
Between 1762 and 1768, he undertook extensive rebuilding of the family estate, Compton Verney House, located near Kineton in Warwickshire. The redesigns of the house were constructed based on plans by architect Robert Adam. In 1769, he commissioned Capability Brown to landscape the gardens of Compton Verney House.
In 1763, he was appointed as a Lord of his Majesty's Bedchamber. In 1772, he inherited significant estates at nearby Chesterton from his cousin Margaret Peyto, the last of the Peyto family line. This inheritance was conditional upon him adding the surname Peyto to his own. Subsequently, the original Peyto family residence, Chesterton House, was demolished in 1802.
John Peyto-Verney died on 15 February 1816. Upon his death, his titles were inherited by his eldest son, John Peyto-Verney.
