Introduction
John Sidney North, born John Doyle on 28 May 1804, and deceased on 11 October 1894, was a British soldier and politician affiliated with the Conservative Party. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for a period spanning 33 years.
Early Life and Family Background:
John Doyle was the son of Lieutenant-General Sir Charles William Doyle. In 1835, he married Lady Susan, the daughter of George North, 3rd Earl of Guilford. In 1838, he legally adopted the surname North by Royal licence, aligning his name with his wife's family title.
Political Career:
In the 1852 general election, North was elected as one of three MPs representing Oxfordshire. He held this parliamentary seat continuously until the constituency was divided in the 1885 general election. During his tenure, he was associated with the Conservative Party and served in the House of Commons for approximately three decades. In 1886, North was sworn into the Privy Council.
Military Service:
In addition to his political career, North held the rank of Colonel in the British Army.
Family Titles and Succession:
His wife Lady Susan North was the daughter of George North, 3rd Earl of Guilford. In 1841, the barony of North that was held by Lord Guildford was called out of abeyance in her favor, making her the tenth Baroness North. Lady Susan North died in March 1884 at the age of 87, and the title was succeeded by her son, William North, after her death. John North outlived his wife by ten years, passing away in October 1894 at the age of 90.
