Introduction
Arthur Charles Legge, born on 25 July 1800 and deceased on 18 May 1890, was a British military officer and politician. He was the fourth son and tenth child of George Legge, the 3rd Earl of Dartmouth, and Lady Frances Finch, daughter of Heneage Finch, the 3rd Earl of Aylesford. His siblings included William Legge, the 4th Earl of Dartmouth, and the Honourable Heneage Legge.
Legge held the rank of General in the British Army. His political career included serving as Member of Parliament (MP) for Banbury, a position he assumed in 1826 after succeeding his elder brother Heneage Legge. He maintained this parliamentary seat until 1830. Additionally, he served as a deputy lieutenant of Kent.
On 8 May 1868, Legge was appointed honorary colonel of the 3rd Administrative Battalion of Staffordshire Rifle Volunteers, a military appointment.
Legge married twice. His first marriage was in 1827 to the Honourable Anne Frederica Holroyd, daughter of John Holroyd, 1st Earl of Sheffield. She died in August 1829. His second marriage was in 1837 to Caroline Bouwens, daughter of James Charles P. Bouwens. They had at least two children together. Caroline died in March 1887.
Arthur Charles Legge remained a widower until his death in May 1890, at the age of 89.
