Introduction

Toshitake Maeda (born December 11, 1865 (Meiji 1, January 8) – April 23, 1890 (Meiji 23)) was a member of the Japanese kazoku nobility and a baron of the Maeda family branch. He was the twelfth son of Maeda Ayatake, lord of Kanazawa Domain. In March 1881 (Meiji 14), he was separated into a branch family and was ennobled as kazoku through imperial decree. In January 1883 (Meiji 16), he studied abroad at King's College in Cambridge, England. When the kazoku peerage system was promulgated in July 1884 (Meiji 17), he was granted the title of baron, and he graduated from college later that year. He died in 1890 (Meiji 23).

Regarding his family and relatives, the "Heisei New-Edited Old Kazoku Family Lineage Great Chronicle" makes no mention of a wife. He adopted Yoshiharu, the third son of former Toyama Domain lord Maeda Toshinori, and took the name Toshitoshi (Toshikoto, 1888–1962). Toshitoshi inherited the family headship following Toshitake's death on May 22, 1890 (Meiji 23). According to the "Heisei New-Edited Old Kazoku Family Lineage Great Chronicle," Toshitoshi had five sons. His eldest son, Toshitaka, who participated in World War II, was subsequently executed as a war criminal in Indonesia after the war.
