Introduction

Lady Louise Alice Elizabeth Mary Mountbatten-Windsor was born on 8 November 2003 at Frimley Park Hospital in Frimley, Surrey. She is the elder child and only daughter of Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh. Her birth occurred prematurely at 11:32 pm, following her mother’s transportation by ambulance from their residence at Bagshot Park, Surrey. Her father was absent at her birth due to an official visit to Mauritius. The delivery was by emergency cesarean section caused by placental abruption, resulting in significant blood loss for both mother and child. Subsequently, Louise was transferred to a neonatal unit at St George’s Hospital, Tooting, London, as a precaution. Her mother remained at Frimley Park Hospital until her discharge on 23 November. Her name was publicly announced on 26 November 2003.

She was baptised in the Private Chapel of Windsor Castle on 24 April 2004 by David Conner, Dean of Windsor. Her godparents include Lady Sarah Chatto, Lord Ivar Mountbatten, Lady Alexandra Etherington, Francesca Schwarzenbach, and Rupert Elliott. Louise was the last royal child to wear the original royal christening gown.

Born with esotropia, Louise underwent an unsuccessful eye operation in 2006, followed by additional treatment in late 2013 which corrected her vision.

Regarding her education, Lady Louise attended St George’s School in Windsor Castle before transferring in 2017 to St Mary’s School in Ascot from Year 9. Her A-Level subjects included English, history, politics, and drama. She participated in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award during her schooling. In September 2022, she commenced studies in English at the University of St Andrews. During the summer of 2022, she was reported to have worked at a garden centre.

In military training, Louise joined the British Army’s University Officers’ Training Corps (UOTC) unit, specifically Tayforth UOTC, in 2024, which comprises students from the University of St Andrews and neighboring institutions. As of 2025, she holds the rank of Officer Cadet in the Army Reserve.

Her public appearances include being a bridesmaid at the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton in 2011, at age seven. In August 2018, she accompanied her mother to Haslar Marina in Portsmouth Harbour to meet young girls earning qualifications through the Royal Yachting Association. That same month, she attended the final of the Hockey Women’s World Cup in London. To mark her 15th birthday in November 2018, Louise and her mother appeared on the television program Strictly Come Dancing as spectators. In December 2018, she attended the International Horse Show at Olympia, London.

In September 2020, she participated in the Great British Beach Clean at Southsea Beach alongside her family. Following the death of her grandfather, Prince Philip, in April 2021, she attended a church service at the Royal Chapel of All Saints and his funeral. She also attended the Prince Philip memorial service in March 2022 and participated in events related to her grandmother Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, including Trooping the Colour, the National Service of Thanksgiving, and the Platinum Party at the Palace. After the Queen’s death on 8 September 2022, Louise stood vigil at Westminster Hall for 15 minutes with her brother James and six cousins, and she was present at her grandmother’s state funeral on 19 September.

On 6 May 2023, she attended the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, and on 7 May, she participated in the Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle.

Lady Louise has been involved with Girlguiding, an organization historically patronized and supported by her family members. She was introduced to riding at an early age and participated in royal celebrations involving horseback riding. She has also taken up carriage driving, a sport associated with her grandfather, Prince Philip. She led carriages at the Royal Windsor Horse Show in May 2017 and achieved third place in a carriage drive event in 2019. She inherited her grandfather’s driving ponies and carriage in April 2021 and demonstrated her carriage driving skills at the Royal Windsor Horse Show in 2022.

Her titles include “Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor,” with some official references previously using “Lady Louise Windsor.” Upon her birth, she held the style of Princess of the United Kingdom due to a royal letters patent issued in 1917. However, her parents’ marriage was announced as making her style as the child of an earl, though her mother stated in 2020 that she retained her right to use the royal style and could choose to do so at age 18.

In recognition of her father’s visit to Manitoba, a lake—Lake Louise—was named in her honor in 2008, along with her brother’s naming of Lake James in the same region.
