Introduction
Steven Meigs Ford was born on May 19, 1956, in the United States. He is the youngest son of Gerald Ford, the 38th President of the United States, and Betty Ford, the former First Lady. Ford is the third child in his family.
He completed his secondary education at T. C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia, graduating on June 13, 1974. At the commencement ceremony, his father, who was then serving as Vice President, delivered the address.
For higher education, Ford attended Utah State University, where he studied range management. His older brother, John Gardner (Jack) Ford, studied forestry at the same institution. Steven Ford also attended California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, focusing his studies on equine studies.
In terms of his professional career, Ford was cast in the 1978 film "Grease" as Tom Chisum but withdrew before filming began, citing stage fright. The role was subsequently played by Lorenzo Lamas. Ford became known for his role as Private Investigator Andy Richards on the soap opera "The Young and the Restless." He joined the cast in 1981, remaining a regular until 1987, with a brief return from 2002 to 2003.
Beyond soap operas, Steven Ford appeared in several films and television series in minor roles, including "Escape from New York," "Babylon 5: In the Beginning," "Armageddon," "Black Hawk Down," "Starship Troopers," "When Harry Met Sally...," "Heat," "Contact," and "Transformers." He also hosted a short-lived series called "Secret Service" from 1992 to 1993.
Ford has been active in charitable and educational endeavors. He serves on the board of trustees for the Gerald R. Ford Foundation in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Politically, he identifies as a moderate Republican and a fiscal conservative.
In his personal life, Ford has publicly acknowledged struggles with alcoholism during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Although he continues to accept acting assignments occasionally, he predominantly dedicates his time to fundraising for charitable causes and delivering speeches and motivational talks, often focusing on issues related to alcoholism.
He announced his engagement to Laura Carlos in 1991; however, plans for marriage did not materialize as he was working on his sobriety at the time. On January 9, 2025, Ford referenced his wife during the funeral of President Jimmy Carter, though her identity has not been publicly disclosed.
In 1980, Ford filed a lawsuit in California concerning the paternity of a boy named Lawrence, born on December 16, 1979, to Joy Malken. He sought custody and visitation rights, resulting in a private and amicable settlement shortly thereafter.
Steven Ford delivered a eulogy written by his father during the 2025 state funeral of former President Jimmy Carter.
His filmography includes roles in both film and television, with specific titles noted above. Further information about his life and career can be found in Doug Wead’s book "All the President's Children," published in 2003.
