Introduction
Junko Ichijō (March 1, 1827 – January 24, 1908), also known as Yoriko, was a Japanese court noble and the principal wife of Tadayoshi Ichijō. Her posthumous name was Shōjū-in.
Birth and Family Background
She was born as the second princess of Prince Fushimi-no-miya Kōchi. Her childhood and common name was Mantsumi-no-miya Noriko no Onna. Her father was Prince Fushimi-no-miya Kōchi, and her mother was Lady Nakamura Soma. Her siblings included Prince Yamashina Kōmin, Prince Kurō-Ni, Prince Konoe Akiho, Prince Kitashirakawa Narihisa, Prince Hachijō-no-miya Hirohisa, Prince Kan'in-no-miya Sadasu, and Prince Higashiyama Nariyasu.
Marriage and Name Change
In 1852 (Kaei 5), she married Tadayoshi Ichijō and subsequently took the name Junko. Through marriage, she was registered into the Ichijō family.
Life Events
In 1863 (Bunkyū 3), her husband Tadayoshi Ichijō passed away. She later entailed the tonsure (became a Buddhist nun) and took the name Shōjū-in. She died on January 24, 1908 (Meiji 41) at the age of 82.
Honors and Titles
Just prior to her death, on January 23, 1908 (Meiji 41), she was awarded the Second Class of the Order of the Rising Sun with the Sacred Crown.
Children
Her daughter, Akiko Yanagisawa, was the principal wife of Yanagisawa Yasunobu.
