Introduction

Dobo (February 20, 1643 – February 7, 1673) was a Manchu of the Aisin Gioro clan. He was the grandson of Nurhaci, the founding emperor of the Qing dynasty, and the fifth son of the Yongtong Prince Duoduo. His mother was the second consort Borjigit. He was heir to thus Prince Rui, Dorgon.

He was born on the second day of the first lunar month of the 8th year of the Chongde era. Dorgon passed away in December of the seventh year of the Shunzhi era (1650). Since Dorgon had no children, Dobo was adopted as Dorgon's successor, inheriting the title of Prince Rui, with a salary three times that of other princes. The court issued an edict to appoint Su Sakah and Zhandai, close attendants, as grand councilors.

In the eighth year of the Shunzhi era (1651), in February, Emperor Shunzhi accused Dorgon of plotting to usurp the throne, acting arbitrarily, persecuting his brother Hao Ge and his descendants, as well as his consort, and consequently decreed the stripping of Dorgon's titles, removal from the ancestral temple sacrifices, withdrawal of the posthumous honor "Xiaole Wu Huang Hou" and the temple sacrifices, and dismissal from the royal family, with his property confiscated. Dobo thus resumed his lineage as a successor of Duoduo.

In the fourteenth year of Shunzhi (1657), Dobo was granted the title of Beile. He died in the hour of the ox (around 1-3 pm) on December 21 of the 11th year of the Kangxi era (February 7, 1673).

In the 43rd year of Qianlong (1778), Emperor Gaozong of the Qing restored Dorgon's title, recognizing him as a meritorious founder with the posthumous title "Zhong" and enshrined him in the Imperial Ancestral Temple. According to the rules for the Prince's burial grounds, his tomb was repaired, and the Ministry of Rites conducted spring and autumn offerings. His noble title was inherited uninterruptedly. An edict reaffirmed that Dobo was a descendant of Dorgon, and instructed that his descendants, Chunying, continue to inherit the title of Prince Rui.
