Li Yan was born in 2006 at Peking Union Medical College Hospital. She is the daughter of Faye Wong and Li Yapeng. Her family background includes her father Li Yapeng, born on September 27, 1971, who hails from Pingdingshan, Henan Province, and is a male actor who graduated from the Central Academy of Drama's Department of Acting. Her mother, Faye Wong, was born on August 8, 1969, in Beijing, and is a renowned Chinese-language pop singer-songwriter. Additionally, Li Yan has an older sister, Dou Jing Tong, born in January 1997, who is the daughter of Faye Wong and her former husband Dou Wei.
At the time of her birth in 2006, Li Yan was diagnosed with congenital cleft lip and palate. Her parents began medical treatment for her at a very young age to improve her health.
