Introduction
Sir Nicholas Pelham (1650 – 8 November 1739) was a British politician active during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He was born in 1650 as the third son of Sir Thomas Pelham, 2nd Baronet. His mother was Margaret, Sir Thomas Pelham's third wife. Pelham received his education at Christ Church, Oxford.
He was knighted on 20 April 1661. Pelham's parliamentary career included serving in multiple post-Restoration Parliaments representing Seaford and Sussex. He later served as a Member of Parliament for Lewes from 1702 to 1705.
Pelham married Jane Huxley, the daughter of James Huxley of Dornford. Together, they had three children: two sons, Thomas Pelham (circa 1678–1759) and James Pelham (circa 1683–1761), and one daughter, Margaret Pelham. Margaret married Sir William Ashburnham, 2nd Baronet.
In 1726, Pelham was re-elected to Parliament at Lewes through the influence of his great-nephew, the Duke of Newcastle. This election occurred after the death of another great-nephew, Henry Pelham. Following Henry Pelham's death, his brother Thomas Pelham had declined to take the seat until his return from Constantinople. When Thomas Pelham was back in England and standing for election in the 1727 general election, Sir Nicholas stepped aside and did not contest the seat further.
Sir Nicholas Pelham died in 1739 at an advanced age.
