Introduction
Caroline Louisa Cavendish-Bentinck (née Burnaby) was born on 23 November 1832 at Baggrave Hall, near Hungarton, Leicestershire. Her parents were Edwyn Burnaby of Baggrave Hall and Anne Caroline Salisbury. She was baptized on 5 December 1832 in Hungarton, Leicestershire. She had a brother named Edwyn Burnaby, was a first cousin of Frederick Gustavus Burnaby, and an aunt to Algernon Burnaby.
On 13 December 1859, she married the Reverend Charles Cavendish-Bentinck as his second wife. Reverend Cavendish-Bentinck was the elder son of Lieutenant Colonel Lord Charles Bentinck and Anne Wellesley, formerly Lady Abdy. His paternal grandparents included William Cavendish-Bentinck, the 3rd Duke of Portland, who served as Prime Minister of Great Britain, and Dorothy Cavendish, daughter of William Cavendish, the 4th Duke of Devonshire.
Caroline and Charles had three daughters:
1. Cecilia Nina Cavendish-Bentinck (11 September 1862 – 23 June 1938), who married Claude Bowes-Lyon, the 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. Their children included Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.
2. Ann Violet Cavendish-Bentinck (9 December 1864 – 15 May 1932).
3. Hyacinth Cavendish-Bentinck (9 December 1864 – 9 December 1916), who married Augustus Edward Jessup, an American and son of Alfred Dupont Jessup. Augustus was the widow of Lady Mildred Marion Bowes-Lyon.
Following the death of her first husband in 1865, Caroline married Henry Warren Scott on 30 September 1870. Henry Warren Scott was the son of Sir William Scott, 6th Baronet, of Ancrum. He died on 23 August 1889 at Forbes House, Ham, Surrey, and was buried in St Andrew's Church, Ham.
Caroline Louisa Scott died at the age of 85 on 6 July 1918 in Dawlish, Devon. She was twice widowed and is known for being the maternal grandmother of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and a great-grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II.
