Introduction

Thomas Spencer Wilson, the 6th Baronet, was born on January 25, 1727, and died on August 29, 1798. He was a British Army officer and a Member of Parliament who served in the House of Commons from 1774 to 1780.

Wilson was the son of Sir Thomas Wilson, the 4th Baronet. He received education at Charterhouse School. In 1760, he succeeded his brother to become the 6th Baronet.

He was married to Jane Weller, and their union produced one son and three daughters. His daughter Margaretta married Charles Perceval, the 2nd Baron Arden. Another daughter, Jane, married Spencer Perceval, who later became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Wilson joined the British Army in 1744 as an ensign in the 8th Regiment of Foot. He attained the rank of captain within that regiment. On April 14, 1762, he became a captain-lieutenant in the 2nd Regiment of Foot Guards. His military career saw steady progression: he achieved the rank of Major-General in 1777, was made colonel of the 50th Regiment of Foot in 1777, then promoted to lieutenant-general in 1782, and finally achieved the rank of full general in 1796.

Throughout his military service, Wilson participated in various campaigns. He was involved in the war in Flanders, the rebellion in Scotland, and military operations in Germany. During the German campaigns, he served as aide-de-camp to Lord Waldegrave at the Battle of Minden. Additionally, he took part in three expeditions along the coast of France.

In addition to his military career, Wilson served as a Member of Parliament for Sussex from 1774 to 1780.
