Introduction
Peniston Lamb was born on 3 May 1770. He was the eldest son of Peniston Lamb, 1st Viscount Melbourne, and Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Ralph Milbanke, 5th Baronet. He had younger brothers who pursued notable careers, including William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, who served as Prime Minister; Frederick Lamb, 3rd Viscount Melbourne; and the Honorable George Lamb.
Lamb's political career began when he was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Newport in 1793. He served in this capacity until 1796. In 1802, he was elected as MP for Hertfordshire, a position he held until his death in 1805.
He is known to have had a personal relationship with Mrs. Sophia Musters (née Heywood), who was born in 1758 and died in 1819.
Peniston Lamb died of tuberculosis on 24 January 1805 at the age of 34. At the time of his death, he was unmarried and had no children. His final days were spent at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton.
