Introduction
Sun Fong-chung, whose English name is Jeannie Sun Fong-chung, was born on November 2, 1927. Her ancestral home is Wuxi, Jiangsu Province. She was born in Beijing. She attended Wuxi First Girls' High School and its affiliated primary school. In 1946, she was admitted to St. John's University in Shanghai, during which she also served as a special correspondent for Nanjing Dagang Gazette. She graduated in 1947 with a Bachelor's degree in Literature. In 1959, she completed her master's coursework at the University of Hong Kong.
In 1953, at the age of 25, Sun Fong-chung was appointed as the founding principal of the Hong Kong Suzhong Primary School. Besides her educational work, she actively participated in social welfare affairs. She initiated the Hong Kong Maternal and Child Health Campaign, the Family Happiness Campaign, and the Family Safety Campaign. In 1969, she founded the Hong Kong-Kowloon Neighborhood Women's Association and was elected president, promoting the "Youth Morality Movement" and summer activities for young people.
She was awarded the Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by the Queen of the United Kingdom and was appointed as a Justice of the Peace. In 1987, she established the first subsidized primary school in Hong Kong offering Mandarin instruction—the Sun Fong-chung Primary School. Later, she also established five kindergartens, a secondary school, and an elderly center to serve different age groups.
From a young age, Sun Fong-chung loved literature. In her youth, her works were mainly lyrical, with detailed descriptions and passionate expression. Her family background is distinguished: her grandfather, Sun Yingwu, was a successful candidate in the Qing Dynasty imperial examination; her maternal grandfather, Zhang Xiaoliao, was a former Chinese consul in Korea; her father, Sun Xuwen, served as the accountant-general of Rehe Province; her uncle by marriage, Zhao Shen, was a renowned Chinese architect, known for the Shanghai Concert Hall. Her husband was Zhou Zhenhuan, who mainly served as a confidential secretary when interviewing the renowned Anti-Japanese war hero Sun Yuanliang. They have two sons and one daughter.
She has held key positions in various public and educational organizations, including director of Sun Fong-chung Primary School, director of Suzhong Primary School, president of the Hong Kong-Kowloon Neighborhood Women's Association, supervisor of Sun Fong-chung Academy, and honorary president/member of several Chinese social organizations. She has received numerous medals and titles of honor.
