Introduction
St George Henry Lowther, 4th Earl of Lonsdale, was born on 4 October 1855. He was the eldest son of Henry Lowther, 3rd Earl of Lonsdale, and Emily Caulfeild. Between 1872 and 1876, he was styled as Viscount Lowther prior to inheriting the earldom.
In 1878, he owned a racehorse named Pilgrimage, which achieved notable success by winning both the One Thousand Guineas and the Two Thousand Guineas. He held the rank of captain in the Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry, a part-time cavalry unit. Additionally, he served as the honorary colonel of the Royal Cumberland Militia. Due to health issues, possibly worsened by alcoholism, he died at a young age on 8 February 1882. Following his death, his younger brother Hugh succeeded to the earldom.
On 6 July 1878, he married the Honourable Constance Gwladys Herbert. She was the third daughter of Lord Herbert of Lea, a Victorian statesman, and the sister of two earls of Pembroke. The marriage produced a single daughter:
- Lady (Gladys Mary) Juliet Lowther, born on 9 April 1881 and died on 23 September 1965. She married Sir Robert Duff, 2nd Baronet, on 9 June 1903; he died on 16 October 1914. She later married Keith Trevor on 12 June 1919; the marriage ended in divorce in 1926. Through her first marriage, she was the mother of Sir Michael Duff, 3rd Baronet of Vaynol, and a daughter named Victoria, who had issue.
After the death of his first wife, Constance Gwladys Herbert, the widow of the 4th Earl married secondly Frederick Robinson, 2nd Marquess of Ripon, on 7 May 1885. She died on 27 October 1917.
