Introduction

Edmund Hornby (1773–1857) was an English politician who served as a Member of Parliament for Preston, Lancashire, from 1812 to 1826. He resided at Dalton Hall near Burton in Westmorland.

Hornby was the eldest son of Reverend Geoffrey Hornby (1750–1812), who was associated with Scale Hall near Lancaster, Lancashire. Geoffrey Hornby held the positions of High Sheriff of Lancashire in 1774 and Deputy Lieutenant of Lancashire. He also served as a Colonel of a Lancashire militia regiment. Geoffrey Hornby's wife was Lucy Smith-Stanley (died 1833), daughter of James Smith-Stanley, Lord Strange (1716–1771). James Smith-Stanley was the son of Edward Stanley, 11th Earl of Derby (1689–1776), of Knowsley Hall, Lancashire. Lucy was also the sister of Edward Smith-Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby (1752–1834).

Edmund Hornby had at least one sibling, Charlotte Margaret Hornby (died 1817). She married her first cousin, Edward Smith-Stanley, 13th Earl of Derby (1775–1851), who was a Member of the Order of the Garter (KG). Their son was Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby (1799–1869), who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during three separate terms: 1852, 1858–1859, and 1866–1868. This makes the 14th Earl Hornby's nephew.

One of Edmund Hornby's younger brothers was Admiral Sir Phipps Hornby (1785–1867).

In terms of marriage and children, Edmund Hornby married Lady Charlotte Stanley (died 1805), his first cousin and a daughter of Edward Smith-Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby. Edmund and Charlotte had children, including their eldest son and heir, Edmund George Hornby (1799–1865). Edmund George Hornby served as a Member of Parliament for Warrington and held the position of Constable of Lancaster Castle.
