Introduction
George Henry Compton Cavendish was born on 14 October 1784. He was the son of Lord George Cavendish, who later became the Earl of Burlington. Cavendish was educated at Eton College, a prominent boarding school in England.
In 1801, Cavendish received his commission as Cornet in the 7th Dragoons, a unit of the British Army. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1802, and subsequently to Captain in 1804. In 1808, he attained the rank of Major and joined his regiment, which was serving in the Peninsular War, a military conflict involving Britain and Spain against Napoleonic France.
During his military service, Cavendish was evacuated from Corunna. In January 1809, while en route back to Britain, he was aboard the HMS Primrose, a transport ship that sank in a storm off the coast of Cornwall. Cavendish drowned at the age of 24 as a result of this incident.
In addition to his military career, Cavendish was involved in politics. He served as the Member of Parliament for the borough of Aylesbury from 1806 until his death in 1809. He thus held his parliamentary seat during a period of significant military and political activity in Britain. Cavendish died before his father, therefore predeceasing the inheritance of the earldom.
References and external links mention his contributions to the British Parliament, with records from Hansard covering his parliamentary activity from 1803 to 2005.
